INTERNATIONAL MISSIONS | Return to Ministry List
The purpose of this ministry is to help our congregation to see and participate in the world-wide work of God to spread of the Gospel of Jesus Christ. We want to see the Gospel give salvation and hope to the lives of people across the globe.
Our congregation is located in the center of a major "mission field" of more than 20 million people in the metropolitan area of New York City! But we are also a highly international congregation, and it is important for us as a community to lift our vision above our own local area, challenging as it is. As a congregation we try to concentrate our efforts in areas where we can make a significant impact.
Honduras We have especially focused on Honduras in Central America by working to establish a vibrant and growing congregation in the town of Travesia on the north coast to serve the impoverished population in that area of Honduras. The congregation there now includes about 70 believers led by Margarito Garcia and his wife. Angel Reyes, one of our elders, and John Tesseyman, one of our former elders, have been especially active in nurturing this congregation spiritually and in helping to develop economic resources in the area to provide work for the members and to allow them to improve their own economic situation.
Nigeria The Manhattan Church helps to support the work of the Church of Christ in Kubwa. The Gospel is spreading rapidly in Nigeria in spite of the conflicts with Islam and the divisions within the country. Effiong Akpan, one of our members, is helping to coordinate this work.
China The Manhattan Church helps to support the work of Linda Benthall as she teaches in a University in Wuhan, China and works in sharing her faith with people there. See www.runlindarun.com.
Mission work always requires financial resources. Anyone may contribute to these outreach efforts by sending a check to the Manhattan Church of Christ and marking it for the particular mission effort you wish to support. |
