CHRIST'S CHURCH for BROOKLYN | Return to Ministry List
According to a New York Times article New York City churches are desperately searching for ideas of how to keep their doors open and their buildings functional. Because of shrinking memberships and changing demographics, churches can no longer afford the upkeep of these sacred spaces. This problem is one of the many facing aging churches in New York City and around the world as churches find themselves declining in membership and in communal effectiveness. The solution to the aging church's dilemma is new churches. New churches can, when given adequate support, become instrumental in transforming lives and the communities in which they are located.
The dream of Manhattan Church of Christ is to plant new churches in the greater metro area of New York City. MCOC recognizes what Mac Lynn publishes year in and year out in his compilation of Churches of Christ in the United States: the greatest need for Churches of Christ is in New York City. Specifically, Brooklyn continues to rank high on Mac Lynn’s list of priority church planting areas. Brooklyn occupies four of the top seven spots in need of Churches of Christ. Located within the targeted area are four of the fastest growing sections of Brooklyn: Brooklyn Heights, Cobble Hill, Boerum Hill and Park Slope. What is needed is a local fellowship for all people regardless of ethnic heritage, cultural background or economic standing. What is needed is a church concerned about the spiritual and physical lives of those living in Brooklyn.
Opportunities for Involvement:
- You can commit to being a part of a core group that makes this church plant happen. That would mean being a member of the new church plant and bringing your energy and life into this new endeavor.
- You can financially commit to this work. Starting a new church in Manhattan is not an easy task in so many ways. Not only will it be challenging to reach out to those of the city but having the finances to keep the dream alive is also necessary and New York City is not a cheap place to live or work.
- You can seriously commit yourself to prayer for this specific ministry. This church plant can only happen with God guiding the way. Please pray often for those who are leading this new church plant and for those who are searching with which we might come in contact.
CHURCH PLANTERS NEEDED: The Manhattan Church of Christ is engaged in planting churches across the metro New York area. We are in the process of planting a church in Brooklyn, and have in place a full-time church planter and a launch team of more than twenty people. We are seeking domestic missionaries (male or female) who can raise their own support and join this exciting effort. If interested, please contact Joe Hays or Tom Robinson.
