HUGO MONROY | Associate Minister, Iglesia de Cristo | Biografia
About Us
Hugo Monroy was born in Colombia; he inherited the peasant world view and religion of his devout family. He grew up as a Roman Catholic but at the age of 12 he started loosing his faith and became atheist. His teenage years were a constant struggle with poverty and faith. He loved biking with friends and wanted to become a professional cyclist. In those days biking was one of the sports on fashion in Colombia. Suddenly, at the age of seventeen in the midst of family and personal crisis, Christ calls him to his kingdom. He became Christian in Bogot‡, the capital city of Colombia.
Soon after he converted to Christ he started attending evening classes on Bible, homiletics, song leading etc. After serving and leading several people to Christ for about seven years in the Bosa congregation, he moved to another congregation and started preaching and taking classes in Philosophy and literature at Saint Thomas University in Bogot‡.
In January of 92 Hugo came to the United States to be enrolled at the Center for Christian Education in Dallas. After graduation from the Center he worked for a while with the Hawn Free Way congregation in Dallas while he was attending Southwestern University in Waxahachie, Texas.
Upon graduation from Southwestern, Hugo spent a summer at Beeville Texas, working for a Hispanic church there. At the end of the summer Hugo was enrolled at Abilene Christian University. While in Abilene he preached for the Southside Hispanic Church of Christ and for the University Church along with the Hispanic preacher Albert Acosta.
Hugo got a Master of Science in Missions and a Master of Arts in Theology from Abilene Christian University. After Hugo finished classes at ACU he moved to Palestine Texas, where he worked at the Court Drive Church of Christ. A lot of great things happen in HugoŐs life while at Court
Drive; first of all he got married to Sandra Lucia Bustos, an old time friend from Colombia. He also discovered new areas of interest such as fishing and golf.
From his ACU days Hugo was a member of the MNYC Team, a missionŐs team with an interest in doing missions in New York City. In March of 2002 it was time for the team to gather in New York and start a new church in the Bronx area. Hugo and Sandra move to New York with the team and started to work with the Hispanic Ministry at the Manhattan church of Christ. At the present time Hugo is teammate with Jared Looney, Ben Cheek, Rafael Rosario and Kurt Linder who together set up a Missions Resource Team called Metrosoul in order to facilitate and promote the planting of house churches in the New York, New Jersey area. Hugo still continues to work with the Manhattan Church of Christ mainly with the Hispanic ministry.
